As an armed force could not be sent by rail through the United States, it was necessary that all supplies and the men of the Canadian forces for Fort Garry should be forwarded by this water route to the head of Lake Superior, from where they were to take the "Dawson Route" of mixed road and river transit to Lake Winnipeg and the scene of action.

THE DAWSON ROUTE: A PHASE OF WESTWARD EXPANSION The basic problem attacked in this thesis is the general lack of readily available knowledge concerning the Dawson Route. While there is much material in manuscript collections and in government publications, little attention has been paid the route in other places.
Several scholars have dealt briefly with particular Author: Bruce M Litteljohn. The first attempt to construct a road connecting the isolated settlement of Fort Garry with eastern Canada began in when S.
Dawson was sent to survey a road between Red River and Lake Superior. Work began in on the Fort Garry end of the survey but the road was still incomplete by the time the Wolseley Expedition was sent to deal. InCaptain Palliser, of the Royal Engineers, was sent out by the English government to explore the region between Lake Superior and the Pacific, looking towards the construction of a railroad across the continent, through the British Possessions.
His report to the government is published in the Blue-Book. The modern day replica of Fort William is built further upriver than the original fort stood; its old location is apparently buried under the modern-day site of the Canadian Pacific Railway yard in Thunder Bay.
